Adoption
Adoption is a lifelong, inter-generational process which unites the triad of birth families, adoptees, and adoptive families forever.
Adoption
Six in ten Americans have had a personal experience with adoption or foster status.
- They themselves were adopted or a foster child
- A family member or a close friend was adopted
- They have adopted a child or have had a foster child
- They have put a child up for adoption
Adoption is a lifelong, inter-generational process which unites the triad of birth families, adoptees, and adoptive families forever. Adoption, especially of adolescents, can lead to both great joy and tremendous pain.Recognizing the core issues in adoption (loss, rejection, guilt and shame, grief, identity, intimacy, control and mastery) is one way we help triad members better understand each other and the residual effects of the adoption experience.
We often see behaviors like these in adopted children:
- Superficially engaging and charming
- Lack of eye contact
- Indiscriminately affectionate with strangers
- Not affectionate at all
- Impulse control
- Poor peer relationships
- Inappropriately demanding and clingy
- Abnormal speech patterns
- Presumptive entitlement issues

If you or someone you know is struggling with adoption issues and could use some support, encouragement and education, we are here to help you — you are not alone!
