Stress and Pain Management

It’s easy to get stressed out when the pressures of work, family, and everyday life are weighing on you. Stress can have physical, emotional and behavioral impacts on your life.

Stomachaches, headaches, worry; anxiety, irritability; overeating, angry outburst and social withdrawal can all be symptoms of stress. Finding strategies to manage stress is critical to balanced, healthy life.

Stress and pain are often closely linked. Each one having an impact on the other, creating a vicious cycle that sets the stage for chronic pain and chronic stress. Learning to better manage stress and balance our lives is a key to relief.

Pain Relief: Start With Stress Relief

Try these tips:

Get moving. Being active can help decrease stress levels. Make exercise a priority, Even 10- 20 minute walk can make a big difference. Using an exercise bike or going to the gym a few times a week can provide days of stress reduction

Get more restful sleep. Proper sleep is an essential ingredient to coping with stress.  Prepare to rest by getting quiet, inside and outside. Make your bedroom a calm, relaxing space.

Find a balance. Take the time to examine your daily routine. Often we schedule every waking moment. Modify your routine. Slow down. Take breaks. This can have a huge impact on your stress level. Identify the things you like to do for pleasure and leisure and make them a bigger part of your daily routine.

Chill out. Relaxation techniques such as breath work, yoga, guided imagery, meditation and prayer promote stress and pain reduction. Learning these techniques gives you tools to use anytime.

Seek support. Evaluation by a mental health professional, such as a psychologist, psychiatrist or Marriage and Family Therapist with expertise in pain management can also help you deal with chronic pain and/or stress.
